I spent some time on Thursday photographing birds in the backyard. The mountain chickadees would jostle over this branch as they tried to get to the pine nuts. Because they often were hanging upside down to get to them, I was trying to get a photo of them in action. What I wasn't expecting was for the crossbill to land on top of the branch while the chickadee was trying to feed! Needless to say, the larger crossbill chased off the chickadee but interestingly didn't try to eat the pine nuts.
